| Hans Barschel (1912-) was born in Berlin. Educated there, he studied art and design with Professors Bohm and Hadank ans was also inspired by the work of A.M.Cassandre. He worked in berlin designing exhibits for the 1936 Olympic Games and posters for the German National Railroad and them emigrated to the United States in 1937, settling in New York. During the 1940's, Barschel had a very active design practice in New York, creating innovative magazine covers for Fortune magazine, Town and Country, Steel Horizons and others. he designed progressive pharmaceutical graphics for CIBA, Sharp and Dohme and La Roche.
Moving to Rochester, New York in the early 1950's, he began teaching art and design at the Rochester Institute of technology, moving the program towards a modernist visual communications curriculum. His work has received many awards and has been documented in PM, Arts & Industry, IDEA , and Gebrauschgraphic magazines. |
